highroad  > Airplanes > Aircraft I Have Met
This is a collection of photos of every type of aircraft I've ever taken, or at least every one I can lay my hands on. I admit, some of the scans were pretty bad, the photos themselves suffering from being 30 years old and/or printed on textured paper, or due to the fact that I used to process my own black-and-white negatives and wasn't very accurate. My goal is to replace or add to the scanned photos with new digital images of the same type aircraft someday. I've tried to be as complete as possible with the aircraft model numbers, and manufacture or order dates (where available) are in brackets afterwards to give you a general idea of their age. Aircraft serial numbers, bureau numbers, N-numbers, etc. (if known) come after the dates. Aircraft names in quotation marks are the unofficial nicknames given to the planes by the pilots who flew them, not the official names given to them by their manufacturers.

Okay, it's time to take off and get on with the show. Happy Landings!

Piaggio P180 Avanti [2004] N147SL
Marfa Municipal Airport, Marfa, Texas - June 2009

A closeup of the Avanti's peculiar nose, with its anhedral canard stabilizer. (And check out that old beacon in the background!)

A rearward shot showing the five-bladed turboprop engine (one of two, of course) and the dual ventral fins. The open door to the right of the prop is the baggage compartment.

An almost-profile shot, which was the best I could do since my little camera has to think between shots. Not bad, really.

Marfa Municipal Airport, Marfa, Texas - June 2009

Well, I knew I had to wander to the side of the runway and get this beauty taking off. Due to the Avanti's speed and the think time of my camera, I wasn't able to get a departing rear 1/4 view. This thing really moves!
Pietenpol Air Camper [1964] NX12969
Fulcher Field, Terlingua, Texas - January 2012

The original Pietenpol Air Camper was designed in 1928 by Bernard H. "Bernie" Pietenpol of Spring Valley, Minnesota. The plans for the Air Camper were originally published in a four part serial in the "Flying and Glider" Manual of 1932-33. One of Pietenpol's goals was to create an airplane that was affordable and easy to construct for home builders using basic wood and metal working skills, and I'd have to say he accomplished his goal. The Pietenpol Air Camper is a very popular model, even in this high-tech age.

This particular aircraft was built by a fellow named Baum in 1964 and was constructed from original 1936 plans. When the current owner first purchased it, it was fitted with a Model A engine, but the owner reluctantly replaced it with a Continental A65 engine so he could carry passengers. Hopefully, a suitable cowling is in the works for it.
