09-06 - Ned and Lily Pearl's Place

During a sojourn to the Hill Country of Texas for a family reunion, my sister, brother-in-law, and I took the opportunity and prowled around the Mills County home of his late grandparents, Joseph Lytle "Ned" Duncan and Lily Pearl Dodson. The place is a little run-down, as it hasn't been lived in in ages, but one of the cousins is hoping to restore it and live there. I certainly hope he can pull it off, as it's a great place.

Yeah, it's a little fixer-upper, all right, but still quite sound.

Lyn telling Joe which ancient peanut butter jars she wants, and Joe trying to figure out a way to avoid getting bit by rattlesnakes while trying to fetch them for her.

Pretty fancy stuff, having your own water tower on your place.

This thing's been sitting in one place so long, a tree grew up through it.

  • FRONT PORCH - OPPOSITE VIEW
Okay, we've made our way around the house now. Time to prowl around the grounds.

  • SHED
Probably a workshop, but also a laundry room (door on the left). These guys were uptown.

Wow, what a find this is! You just don't see these things anymore.

  • THE BACKYARD
Can you imagine having all this land to play in and explore as a kid? Joe said he'd sometimes be gone all day, prowling the countryside armed with his trusty Red Ryder BB Gun. (You could put an eye out with that thing!)

  • FARM EQUIPMENT
I'm not too up on my farm machinery, but from the looks of the blade on the right, I'd say this was a horse-drawn riding plow.

The side of one of the outbuildings was this great pressed tin. I couldn't do anything about the tree limb, so I incorporated it into the shot.

This is how us kids occupied ourselves back in our day -- no GameBoys, no iPods, no personal DVD players -- just good old-fashioned discarded vehicle parts. (Frankly, I didn't care too much for tire swings myself; a board seat worked just fine, and was much more comfortable.)

Looks like one of the wheels off of a riding plow. This little item may come up missing, if Lyn has anything to say about it; may not, if Joe does.
