11-02 Yucca Raiders
Imagine my surprise when I came to work one day and found the little yucca in front of the Entrance Station beginning to bloom! That's the first time it's ever bloomed since it was planted by my former boss, Janie, in 1995 when the booth was built. Then, imagine my dismay when one of the visitors I was waiting on commented, "Look! A deer's eating the yucca bloom!" and began taking pictures of it. After I quietly and calmly ushered the visitor out of my lane (such self-control!), I banged on the window to scare it off, but to no avail, and soon the one was joined by two others, at which point a free-for-all ensued as each deer was not to be outdone. What could I do? It's so dry and bare out here, I figured they needed it more than we did. By that time, the deed was done, anyway. This then is the story . . .

YUCCA BLOOM - DAY 1
Tuesday, March 8, 2011
This most likely isn't the first day of the bloom, but it's certainly the first day the bloom was noticed. My co-worker, Cindy, had made no mention of it before this. Heck, it took me two days to notice it myself. I couldn't believe my eyes. This was terribly exciting! (This isn't the most artistic shot I've ever taken, due to it being what's called an "establishment shot" denoting where it was taken -- in this case, in front of the booth, seen in the background.)
